Offices held, 1993 to the present

His record spans both the legislative and the executive branches, at State and Union level. Since 2012 it has been set in the Rajya Sabha, a permanent House in which he has represented two States.

Governance

Running ministries

A Cabinet Minister leads a ministry’s policy, answers for it in Parliament and shares collective responsibility for the Government’s decisions. Nadda has led the health ministry at two levels: in Himachal Pradesh (1998–2003) and in the Union Government (2014–2019 and since 2024). Since June 2024 he has also led the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Healthcare access

Programmes that reach households

Several national programmes under his two ministries deliver services directly to people. They are Government of India schemes, implemented with the States. Their outcomes are reported by the implementing institutions.

  • Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY — hospital cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year, extended in 2024 to everyone aged 70 and above.
  • Ayushman Arogya Mandirs — more than 1.78 lakh primary care centres operational by July 2025.
  • Jan Aushadhi Kendras — 20,149 generic-medicine outlets reported in June 2026.

State-level experience

Himachal Pradesh

His State-level experience was in Himachal Pradesh. He was MLA for Bilaspur for three terms and led the BJP group in the Assembly from 1994 to 1998. In the State cabinet he held Health and Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs, and later Forest and Science and Technology. Outside government, he was President of the Himachal Pradesh Olympic Association (2008–2012) and of the State’s handball and archery associations.

National responsibilities

National and international roles

At the national level he has served in the Union Cabinet and, in his party, as National General Secretary (2010–2014) and National President (2020–2026). Internationally, he was elected President of the 68th World Health Assembly in 2015. He chaired the WHO South-East Asia Regional Committee in 2024 and the BRICS Health Ministers’ Meeting in 2026.

Parliamentary work

In the Rajya Sabha

As Leader of the House, he coordinates the Government’s business in the Rajya Sabha. As a minister, he answers for two ministries. His committee service is recorded from 2012, including as Chairman of the Committee on Human Resource Development in 2014.
